Secret Santa rules: how to organize it

In a Secret Santa, each person gives a gift to exactly one other person in the group, and nobody knows in advance who their gift comes from. Instead of everyone buying for everyone, each person buys one gift. That saves money and stress for big families, friend groups and teams.

How to run it in five steps

  1. Set the group: who's in? It works with three people or more.
  2. Agree on the rules: budget, exchange date, and whether couples may draw each other.
  3. Draw names: everyone gets one name in secret. Nobody can draw themselves.
  4. Buy the gift: within the budget, suited to the person you drew.
  5. Exchange gifts: the group decides whether Santas reveal themselves.

The key rules

Drawing names: hat or online?

The classic way is pulling names out of a hat. It has two catches: whoever draws their own name has to redraw, and everyone has to be in the same room. Many online generators also show the organizer the result, so the organizer can't play fairly.

With Santalo you just enter the names. Everyone gets their own link that shows only them who they're buying for. Nobody sees the pairs, not even you, so you can join in. If someone opens another person's link, the right person later sees it was already revealed.

FAQ

How many people do you need?

Three or more. It gets more fun from about five, because guessing gets harder.

What if someone draws their own name?

With paper slips you redraw. Online generators like Santalo rule it out from the start.

Can you tell people who you drew?

No, that's the point of the game. After the exchange, Santas can reveal themselves if the group wants to.
